Nigeria At 56 by Boboye Adeyemi

The most populous black nation in the world clocks 56 today. Its been a long journey getting here, as the country has gone through a lot; some seem to threaten her existence, some to strengthening it. Some to make mockery of her as the giant of Africa; some to strengthening her rank among the giant nations of the world.

Nigeria has been crippled by well-known myriads of problems over the years, ranging from corruption, Boko Haram, militancy, leadership and the recent economic recession that has led many Nigerians in a complete state of quagmire, all these are known by  a toddler growing up on the street of Borno.

Nigeria; a nation, to mostly a dream, to some, a scam and few an impossibility. Of course, no position taken above is genuinely wrong as Nigeria is no doubt a rainbow of many varieties of ROYGBIVs. Unlike many nations of the world that are wanting to be great again, the long and much anticipated miracle of the greatness of our unproud-of country is less of divinity but more about individual and societal positive changes.

We must avoid the well-worn path of a critic and wailer and journey on the path of a change agent. The change we seek for in Nigeria begins with you and me.

We must go beyond the concept of passing the bucks on our leaders and take the bull by the horn in the emancipation of a greater Nigeria and put the map of the country among the great nations of the world. We must look beyond this perilous time and focus on a better day, we need to draw our strength from the words of Jesse Jackson at the 1998 Democratic National convention Address.

"Wherever you are today, you can make it. Hold your head high, stick your chest out. You can make it. It gets dark sometimes, but the morning comes. Dont you surrender Suffering breeds character, character breeds faith. In the end faith will not disappoint Keep hope alive on tomorrow night and beyond keep hope alive!"

No nation is perfect, it needs to be made perfect by the contribution of the citizens. For us to have a perfect Nigeria we must all join hands to make it work.

I pray our dream of a better tomorrow for our nation to come true for us, we belong to Nigeria, a nation of pride, land flowing with milk and honey Good people, Great nation.

No one said the battle would be easy. But we need to persevere if Nigeria is to be great again we are heading TO THE RIGHT DIRECTION

*Happy Independence Day.*
